Look beyond the lantern: compare the main hall’s sweeping roof, the gates and the five-story pagoda. The present main hall was rebuilt in 1958; this is a living place of worship with layers of history.

Make it a shared observation

This is a useful architectural counterpoint to the temple area. Look at the building from outside, then consider the upper observation terrace to understand how the shopping street and temple grounds sit together.

Read the view together

Look for the relationship between the temple grounds, the shopping street and the surrounding blocks. Each point out something you had not noticed from street level. For an architecture-loving couple, understanding that setting can add more than another close-up of a landmark.

For homes, shopfronts & a bathhouse

My picks within the museum are W6, the House of Kunio Mayekawa; E6, Takei Sanshodo stationery store; and E4, Kodakara-yu bathhouse. Compare private rooms with spaces once shared by a neighborhood.

Choose details across the buildings

In Mayekawa’s house, look at how windows relate to the room. At Takei Sanshodo, compare the shopfront with a modern stationery store. At Kodakara-yu, notice how an everyday communal activity shaped a building. Pick one detail each and discuss which place you could imagine using.

For architecture, art & garden together

The Kengo Kuma-designed building brings a contemporary setting to Japanese and East Asian art. I would choose it for someone who enjoys the transition between galleries and a Japanese garden as much as individual objects.

Enjoy the transitions

Notice the change between the entrance, the galleries and the garden rather than looking only for a single architectural feature. Each choose a view where a frame, shadow or surface changes what you see. This suits a couple who enjoys looking slowly and comparing impressions.

Asakura Museum of Sculpture

Fumio Asakura’s former home and studio offers a more personal encounter with architecture. Notice the relationship between working spaces, domestic rooms and gardens, rather than seeing only the sculptures.

Imagine the working life

Compare the feeling of a place for making art with a place for living. Look for how a view, an arrangement of objects or a room’s proportions might affect concentration. You can enjoy that question without knowing the names of all the sculptures.
